Yellowstone Day 1 Part 2

It's ironic that our one night in the park was the most expensive room on our whole trip, and it was the least comfortable.  I'm not saying it was UNcomfortable, it just wasn't no Grand Hyatt.  No telephone, no flat screen, no wireless internet.  No puffy, fluffy beds.  But it was worth it to be right in the middle of everything.  And Annette said it was her favorite.  So go figure.

We stayed here, at the Lake Lodge cabins.

These cabins are simpler and more rustic accommodations than the Lake Lodge Hotel just up the street from it.  The hotel was built in 1891 as an upscale place for visitors to stay, but when private automobiles were given entrance to the park in 1915, a mid-level lodging option was needed for those who didn't want to sleep in tents.  So in 1926 Lake Lodge was completed.

This is the view from the front porch of the main lodge.

And this is the front porch. It's enormous.

The cabins were old and simple, but clean and we did have our own bathroom.

We had dinner in the cafeteria dining room, and afterward took a walk down to the lake. From our table next to the window we could see two large bison lumbering out of a forest patch, and we wanted to get a closer look. No need for park rangers or a standby ambulance -- they totally ignored everyone who happened to walk by on their evening stroll. Still, we kept a good distance.

As the sun tucked itself behind the mountain we headed back to our cabin for the night. Earlier, when Wade had checked in at the front desk, the lady who worked behind the counter outlined on a park map all the places we needed to see since we only had a day. We were all excited for what that day had in store for us.
